Get Ready for the 2020 Christmas Bird Count!

Get Ready for the 2020 Christmas Bird Count!

Golden Gate Bird Alliance is pleased to announce that our Christmas Bird Counts will take place this December. GGBA traditionally sponsors two counts — one centered around Oakland and one centered around San Francisco.

Spend a fun day outdoors with a team counting individual birds and species, and contributing to our understanding of bird populations. Both beginners and experienced birders welcome.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, this year’s teams will be much smaller in number and will require social distancing, masks, and your own scopes and equipment. Our Oakland count will take place on Sunday, December 20, 2020. The San Francisco count will take place on Tuesday, December 29, 2020. We will not host our traditional in-person dinners, but we will host a final tally count via Zoom.

Welcome to the 2015 Christmas Bird Count!

Welcome to the 2015 Christmas Bird Count!

We’re looking forward to our 2015 Oakland and San Francisco Christmas Bird Counts! The Oakland count will take place on Sunday December 20, while the San Francisco count will be on Tuesday December 29.

Registration for both counts is now closed. If you signed up for the count, you will be contacted by your team leader during the week before your count.

Media: You’re invited to cover the Oakland or SF count! Contact Communications Director Ilana DeBare at idebare@goldengatebirdalliance.org or (510) 301-5573.

The CBC is a fun event for both beginning and experienced birders. This is the 116th year of this nationwide Audubon tradition. Enjoy a fun day of birding, while contributing to our understanding of bird populations through the largest and oldest citizen science project in the world. Then come share results at the festive compilation dinner after each count!

For information and registration for each count, see https://goldengatebirdalliance.org/birding-resources/christmas-bird-counts/.

NOTE: This year the Oakland count is looking to expand the number of people participating as feeder watchers. Do you have friends in the East Bay with backyard bird feeders? Click here for a flyer you can print and share with them about the count.

2014 Christmas Bird Counts

2014 Christmas Bird Counts

Our 74th Oakland Christmas Bird Count took place on Sunday December 14: Read about it on our blog! The SF count will be on Tuesday December 30. Registration for the count is now closed, but we can still use a few more volunteers for the festive dinner after the San Francisco count on Tuesday evening December 30. Email nweeden@goldengatebirdalliance.org if you can volunteer, or click here for more information on the count and dinner.

If you’ve signed up for the count, you should be contacted by the team leader for your area sometime during the week before the count.

Now in its 115th year, the CBC is a classic Audubon tradition. It’s free! It’s fun! Plus the data on bird populations gathered by count participants is more important than ever. Scientists with National Audubon used CBC data as one of the key sources of information for their recent report on birds and climate change. Our efforts as citizen-scientists will provide a baseline and a way to track the effects of both climate change and conservation initiatives on Bay Area birds.
