Vollmer Peak (Berkeley/Orinda)

May 14 @ 7:00 am - 9:00 am

Vollmer Peak, at 1,905 feet tall, is considered the highest point in the Berkeley Hills and a magnet for migrating birds and rarities.  The combination of hilly, shrubby, and open habitats give us excellent opportunities to view a variety of birds, while also enjoying spectacular views from the Bay to Mt. Diablo (and all the way to the Sierra if it’s clear). Technically, it’s part of the San Pablo ridge, a crest that brings in a fascinating combination of coastal and interior birds (for example, all 3 nuthatch species are sometimes seen in close proximity).  This is often a great spot for warblers, tanagers, flycatchers and other migrants.

Curious what birds you might see? eBird has a list of species sighted here in previous Mays: https://ebird.org/hotspot/L1292955?yr=all&m=5&rank=mrec&hs_sortBy=taxon_order&hs_o=asc

Wear sturdy footwear: most of the time we’ll be on a paved path, but part of the trail is unpaved and can be steep at times.  There is a latrine by the parking lot.  Birders of all skill levels are welcome.  Bring binoculars if you have them, a few extras will be available.
