Shorebirds at San Leandro Marina (San Leandro)

Sunday, July 10, 2022 @ 6:30 am - 9:30 am

Fall starts early along the East Bay shoreline, and by late June and early July, fall shorebird migration is already in full swing. Although diversity doesn’t peak until August and September, July is a great time to look for peeps, Wilson’s Phalaropes, and other early migrants such as Willets, Long-billed Curlews, and yellowlegs. San Leandro Marina has both foraging and roosting sites, and a variety of habitats – rocky shoreline, exposed mudflats along the bay, protected mudflats separate from the bay, and vegetated marsh. This attracts a diverse group of shorebirds and often allows for close looks at them, which will allow us to get reacquainted with shorebirds in preparation for the rest of fall migration. There are public restrooms and parking, and we will do probably 3-4 miles of walking on level, paved trails.

Leader: Alex Henry, awhenry@umich.edu
