San Leandro-Hayward Shoreline Bike and Bird
September 25 @ 10:00 am - 3:00 pm
It’s still early for ducks, but come look for shorebirds, waders, rails, raptors and a few passerines on this shoreline ride. We will ride up to 20 flat miles from San Leandro BART (on city streets) to San Leandro Marina and down to Winton Ave. on the Bay Trail on mostly paved trail. The Bay Trail south of Grant Ave is unpaved, so if you are uncomfortable on hard-packed dirt and some gravel, you can join us till Grant Ave where you can retrace to San Leandro BART or escape to Bay Fair BART. Trip will last until approximately 3 p.m.
Bring binoculars, snacks, lunch and water; we won’t pass places to buy food. Wear layers to stay warm on this leisurely paced ride. Bicycle helmets required. Rain or poor air quality (due to smoke) cancels. Call or email Pat Greene about weather or smoke-related cancellations, and Cathy Bleier with any other questions. And look for updates on the status of the ride on GGAS-chat or the Grizzly Peak Cyclists website.
This trip is free but advance registration is required. Registration will open two weeks before the trip and close at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 23. Directions for registered participants are below.
Please note the public health guidelines for this trip, as we emerge from the Covid-19 pandemic:
- Trip is limited to 10 participants, plus the leaders. There will not be a waiting list.
Participants must register online and acknowledge acceptance of our liability waiver. Each person must register separately. No “drop ins,” please.
- This birding ride is co-listed with Grizzly Peak Cyclists (GPC). Participants must register online and acknowledge acceptance of our liability waiver. Agreeing to the GGAS liability waiver is also agreeing to the Grizzly Peak Cyclists waiver.
Thank you for your flexibility in helping us ensure that everyone remains healthy!
We will meet at the San Leandro BART Station outside the pay area on the west side of the station. Leaders plans to be on trains scheduled to arrive at 9:53 and 10:00 from SF and El Cerrito, respectively. If you drive to the start, be at the station ready to roll at 10:00.
