Sacramento Valley Weekend Trip
Saturday, December 4, 2021 @ 8:30 am - Sunday, December 5, 2021 @ 12:00 pm
We’ll meet at the Cosumnes Preserve near Thornton for close-up looks at waterfowl and shorebirds. Viewing here involves strolling on wide, flat paths adjacent to a large pond and marsh. We’ll then drive a short distance to Staten Island for Sandhill Cranes, swans, Cackling Geese, and other waterfowl. We’ll car-bird here, stopping periodically to scope the fields adjacent to the road.
After finishing at Staten Island, we’ll eat lunch nearby—either on your own or at the famous Wimpy’s Cafe. After lunch we’ll head north to the Sacramento NWR near Willows for the sunset Snow Geese flights.
Sunday morning we’ll return to the Sacramento NWR. We’ll drive the auto tour route looking and listening for the thousands of Snow and Ross’s Geese as well as dozens of other species of waterfowl, raptors, and land birds. On the way home Sunday, we’ll stop at the Colusa NWR to spend some time on the viewing platform, drive the auto tour route, and maybe see some of the comparatively rare Tule Geese.
Lodging and meals in Willows will be on your own.
Warning: It seems that motel vacancies may be tight, presumably because of hunting season. We suggest that you make a motel reservation in Willows for Saturday night quickly after you successfully register for the trip.
