Elsie Roemer & Crab Cove (Alameda)

September 6 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

The millions of shorebirds that winter on San Francisco Bay make it a state and global Important Bird Area. It is part of the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network and is also designated as a Wetland of International Importance under UNESCO’s Ramsar Convention. This time of year, we’ll have a chance to see shorebirds that are headed to Central and South America after a fueling stop, as well as those who are here for the winter.  Many will still be molting out of their summer plumage. (This is a chance to see Black-bellied Plovers with black bellies.)

This trip is timed with the tides, so that feeding shorebirds will be close in. We’ll be walking short distances on level, mostly paved paths, so this trip is accessible for birders with mobility limitations. Bring water and sun protection. Spotting scopes welcome and appreciated. Restrooms and water are available.

Leader: Maureen Lahiff, MLahiff@aol.com, (510) 484-6529

This trip is free but advance registration is required. No drop-ins, please. Registration will open two weeks in advance and will close on the Thursday before the trip at 4 p.m. Directions for registered participants are listed below.

Please note the public health guidelines for this trip, as we emerge from the Covid-19 pandemic:

  • Walk is limited to 25 participants (plus the leaders). There will not be a waiting list.

  • Participants must register online and acknowledge acceptance of our liability waiver. Each person must register separately.

  • No “drop ins,” please. We’re trying to keep everyone safe with manageable group sizes!

  • We will adhere to any additional health guidelines from the county or venue.

Thank you for your flexibility in helping us ensure that everyone remains healthy! Because we have to limit the size of trips, please do not sign up unless you are committed to attending.
