Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park (Stream Trail)

Sunday, May 29, 2022 @ 8:00 am - 10:00 am

This is a shorter trip with less walking than our usual field trips at this location.  We will enjoy quality time, what Malcolm Margolis calls “deep hanging out,” but will finish before it gets really hot and the park gets very crowded on Memorial Day Weekend.

Special target birds include California Quail, Wilson’s Warbler, Pacific-slope Flycatcher and Pacific Wren.  This is a great trip for those who want to start learning to identify birds by sound, as several of the birds that make their homes here or arrive for the summer have distinctive songs and calls. (I’ll email some suggested birds to study to those who register.)

We’ll be walking out and back through varied habitat on mostly level trails, which are hard-packed or paved.   The total distance is less than 2 miles, with earlier turn-around points possible.

There are flush toilets near the meeting area and at a  few spots along the way, along with benches and picnic tables for rest stops and snacks.

Face masks required for anyone not fully vaccinated and boosted.

Please bring a water bottle. There are restrooms with flush toilets at several points: across from the Wayside parking area and along the hike, and some water spigots. There are benches and picnic tables for rest stops

This trip is free but advance registration is required. The exact location and directions will be provided to registered participants. Registration will open on two weeks before the trip and close at 4 pm on Thursday, May 26.

Leader: Maureen Lahiff, MLahiff@aol.com, (510) 484-6529

Please note the public health guidelines for this trip, as we emerge from the Covid-19 pandemic:

  • Walk is limited to 20 participants (plus the leaders). There will not be a waiting list.

  • Participants must register online and acknowledge acceptance of our liability waiver. Each person must register separately. No “drop ins,” please.

  • Participants will receive the trip directions and meeting spot by email when they register.

Thank you for your flexibility in helping us ensure that everyone remains healthy! Because we have to limit the size of trips, please do not sign up unless you are committed to attending.

Directions: Meet at the Redwood Gate entrance, which opens at 8 am. Parking fee is $5 per car if  you do not have an East Bay Regional Parks Foundation membership. Drive to the Canyon  Meadow parking area, where the paved road ends.  There are accessible parking spaces.

You are unlikely to have cell phone service or internet access in Redwood Canyon.
