Point Molate (Richmond)
Saturday, December 4, 2021 @ 8:30 am - 10:30 am
Come bird and learn about the history of this part of Richmond and current issues with a proposed development at Pt. Molate. Jim Hanson of the California Native Plant Society, a member of the Pt. Molate Alliance, has kindly offered to co-lead this trip. Masha will focus on the birds and some plants, Jim will focus on the area’s history, native plant communities, and the conservation issues and opportunities at hand. Total round trip distance is around a couple miles. The trail from the Pt. Molate Beach Park is gravelly where there was once a railroad track and part of it is wooded and with tree roots, therefore the trail is not currently wheelchair accessible. It’s a fascinating and diverse landscape right near the foot of the Richmond-San Rafael bridge. Parking is ample, but official bike parking is kind of non-existent – you have to jerry rig something you feel comfortable with. That said, it’s a lovely ride either across the bridge from Marin, or mostly along the Bay Trail from points south in the East Bay. There is one porta-potty at the parking lot.
We will be looking and listening for birds and enjoying our winter visitors and resident birds. Here is a BAR CHART of birds reported in Dec-Jan at Pt. Molate Beach Park. A Wandering Tattler was seen in late October. Bring binoculars if you have them and if you have a scope to share, please bring, too!
Heavy rain cancels.
Leader: Masha Gutkin (firstname.lastname@example.org / 415-812-7448) and Jim Hanson
