Mount Sutro Open Space Preserve (San Francisco)

Saturday, July 16, 2022 @ 8:00 am - 11:00 am

The UCSF Mount Sutro Open Space Preserve is a 61-acre remnant of more than 2000 acres of eucalyptus trees planted by Adolf Sutro in the late 1800s. UCSF has instituted a long term management plan for the OSP with the initial phase focused on removing dead and dying trees to improve fire safety. Some tree replacement planting is evident, and the Sutro Stewards are maintaining the native plantings at the summit meadow and utilizing openings along trails for further conservation planting.

We’ll walk about two miles, with significant climbing on mostly well-graded trails, but there are rocky spots and exposed roots.  We’ll look and listen for birds.  In early May we may still see some spring migrants, and the summer residents should be busy with their broods.

Heavy fog, rain, or very strong wind cancels.

Leader:  Pat Greene, PJGREENE@SONIC.NET, cell (415) 481-5469 and Whitney Grover, WLGROVER@GMAIL.COM, (831) 421-2949

This trip is free but advance registration is required. Registration will open two weeks before the trip and close at 4 p.m. on Thursday, July 14. Directions for registered participants are below.

Please note the public health guidelines for this trip, as we emerge from the Covid-19 pandemic:

  • Trip is limited to 10 participants, plus the leaders. There will not be a waiting list.

  • Participants must register online and acknowledge acceptance of our liability waiver. Each person must register separately. No “drop ins,” please.

Thank you for your flexibility in helping us ensure that everyone remains healthy! Because we have to limit the size of trips, please do not sign up unless you are committed to attending.

Directions to the start: Meet at the Aldea Community Center, 155 Johnstone Dr at 8:00 AM. Park on Clarendon or Dellbrook as close to the Johnstone intersection as possible, then hike a short distance up Johnstone Dr. to the UCSF Aldea Center on your left (across from the intersection of Medical Center Way on the right). Allow ~10 min to park and walk to the meeting place. UCSF can be reached by public transit: N Judah light rail, and 43, 6 and 66 buses. The Aldea Center is a significant uphill climb from the transit stops. There is a restroom at Aldea, but it is not usually open at the start of the walk.
