Mount Sutro Open Space Preserve (San Francisco)

Saturday, January 29, 2022 @ 8:00 am - 11:00 am

A new Trailhead has been officially opened on Clarendon Ave where there is usually ample parking on weekends. We’ll cover about two miles with significant climbing on mostly well-graded trails with some rocky spots and exposed roots (sutrostewards.org/trail-map) in the UCSF Mount Sutro Open Space Preserve. The preserve is a 61-acre remnant of more than 2000 acres of eucalyptus trees planted by Adolf Sutro. We will be looking and listening for birds and enjoying our winter visitors and resident birds. Here is a Bar Chart of birds reported in Jan-Feb on Mount Sutro.

UCSF has instituted a long term management plan for the OSP with the initial phase focused on removing dead and dying trees to improve fire safety. Some tree replacement planting is evident, and the Sutro Stewards are maintaining the native plantings at the summit meadow and utilizing openings along trails for further conservation planting. UCSF has commissioned GGAS to do a survey of bird and butterfly populations. The survey is in its third year.

Leader: Whitney Grover, WLGROVER@GMAIL.COM, (831) 421-2949, and Pat Greene, PJGREENE@SONIC.NET, cell (415) 481-5469
