Miller-Knox Shoreline Park (Richmond)

August 28 @ 7:00 am - 9:00 am

Miller/Knox is truly one of the gems of the East Bay parks, and fall migration is the most exciting time to explore it. Miller/Knox is one of very few parks in the East Bay where there are wooded hills immediately along the Bay, and the result is a wide variety of terrestrial habitats which serve as a beacon to songbirds migrating over the Bay. The lagoon and shoreline also offer the potential for shorebirds or waterfowl, but the focus will be on searching through as much of the songbird habitat as we are able. Pine forests attract nuthatches, creepers, and townsend’s warblers; fennel and scrub attract sparrows and yellow warblers and flycatchers; and the manicured lawn with spaced out eucalyptus is great for tanagers, orioles, and bluebirds.

The proximity to the Bay increases the probability of rare migrants or vagrants, and the elevation helps the habitat stand out from the highly developed and industrial area around Richmond Marina.

This walk will be several miles and we will start out doing a loop around the lagoon and through the scrub, which is all on level trails, and then we will hike up into the hills, at which point there are some steep trails. There are bathrooms available and plenty of parking. We will start at 7:00 AM and depending on the weather conditions and levels of migrant activity, we will spend 3-4 hours birding. However if anyone doesn’t want to stay the whole time that’s totally fine, they can come for the first half, then leave after the level portion before we head up into the hills.
