Fort Mason (San Francisco)

Sunday, January 16, 2022 @ 8:00 am - 10:00 am

Meet in front of the Community Garden to explore several different habitats in this compact part of GGNRA. This will be the beginning of winter, which means all our wintering species should be present, and the species count can be as high as 50.  We’ll explore Aquatic Park for Red-Breasted Mergansers and other ducks, grebes and loons.  We’ll also look for Black Turnstones on the shore. The garden and the Battery should have a variety of land birds, including warblers, thrushes, woodpeckers and sparrows. Restroom in meadow, ample parking if there is no race on the waterfront (also easily accessible by transit). Heavy rain cancels.

Leader: David Assmann, david_assmann@yahoo.com

This trip is free but advance registration is required. Registration will open two weeks before the trip and close at 4 p.m. on Thursday, January 13. Directions for registered participants are below.

Please note the public health guidelines for this trip, as we emerge from the Covid-19 pandemic:

  • Walk is limited to 15 participants, plus the leaders. There will not be a waiting list.

  • Participants must register online and acknowledge acceptance of our liability waiver. Each person must register separately. No “drop ins,” please.

Thank you for your flexibility in helping us ensure that everyone remains healthy! Because we have to limit the size of trips, please do not sign up unless you are committed to attending.

Directions: Meet in front of the Community Garden. We will also walk to Aquatic Park. Restroom in the Great Meadow and ample parking if there is no trace on the waterfront (also easily accessible by transit).
