Alvarado/Wildcat Canyon Regional Park (Richmond)
Monday, November 8, 2021 @ 9:00 am - 1:00 pm
In anticipation of a Christmas Bird Count in Richmond this year, come explore one of its original parks, Alvarado/Wildcat Canyon Regional Park. This is the original homeland of the Ohlone’s Huchiun tribe that extended from Temescal Creek to the San Pablo Creek and Wildcat Canyon drainages. In 1772 the arrival of Spanish troops marked the beginnings of disruptive changes to the Ohlone Indians way of life. By 1840 this region had been parceled out in land grants causing the streams and springs of Wildcat Canyon to become the focus of water rights’ wars. In 1920s the East Bay Municipal utility District ended such disputes by bringing water from the Mokelumne River to the East Bay. In 1936 Wildcat Canyon Regional Park was created when the East Bay Regional Parks acquired 1,910 acres. Currently the Park covers 2,789 acres.
Come explore this fantastic and wild park in the Richmond Hills where coyotes and bobcat still roam, and at least 4 species of owl have been heard or seen. We will walk the dirt road heading south towards Tilden Park up Wildcat Canyon. The plan is to walk 2.3 miles one way to the intersection of The Rifle Range Road Trail along Wildcat Creek to explore for birds and other wildlife. The return hike is your choice, hike back through the hills or return on the fire road. The road is undulating and consists of sections of pavement, dirt and gravel with some inclines.
Please bring water and a snack. There are public bathrooms at the trailhead. Beginning birders are welcome. Please bring your own binoculars. Scopes are also welcome, although I will not be carrying one.
