Albany Shoreline Bird Walk
September 19 @ 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Migration is in full swing along the Pacific Coast Flyway, so come to the Albany shoreline to see who’s showing up or passing through. Novices, advanced birders, and everyone in between are welcome as we visit the Albany mudflats, McLaughlin Shoreline State Park, and the Albany Bulb. For a sense of how this walk goes, see this pre-CoVID blog.
We’ll meet nearly 2 hours after high tide for excellent views of an abundance of shorebirds, ducks and other denizens of the newly exposed mudflats. Then, an easy, mostly flat 1-mile loop on gravel/dirt paths around the McLaughlin Shoreline Park uplands area to pick up land birds (possible Western Meadowlark & Say’s Phoebe) as well as views of the open water for diving ducks, pelicans, grebes, and more (Peregrine Falcon and Osprey have both been seen here recently). Continuing on out to the Albany Bulb (optional), we’ll pick up more species including possible Oystercatchers, Black Turnstones, White-tailed Kites and various woodland species, along with spectacular views of the Bay including SF, Mt. Tam, the Bay Bridge and the Golden Gate Bridge. Easy to leave anytime if you need to leave early. There is a handicap-accessible pit-latrine bathroom. Bring binoculars and a spotting scope if you have them, but I’ll have a few extra pairs of binoculars if you don’t have any. Dress warmly, it’s often windy here.
