Albany Bulb

September 26 @ 7:00 am - 9:00 am

The Albany Waterfront is one of the most exciting and diverse areas for birds in the East Bay, situated directly across the Bay from the Golden Gate, giving great views and also making it an important stopover and wintering spot for migrating shorebirds and waterfowl. The waterfront boasts several different habitats, including open Bay waters, rocky shoreline, sandy beach, coastal mudflats, saltwater/brackish marsh, grassland, and patches of fennel, willow, cypress, pine, and eucalyptus. Corresponding this wealth of habitats is an incredibly diverse community of birds, ever-changing with the turn of the seasons.

Join us at 7 a.m. to explore this underrated hotspot: The walk will last between 2 and 4.5 hours. (Depending on time of year and how many birds are present!) Fall is best for rare migrant songbirds. Late winter and early spring are most diverse overall and the area can host around 70 species. Late spring and summer tend to be overall the least diverse seasons, but there can be good swallow diversity, and this time of year will give us the opportunity to see shorebirds in breeding plumages, to watch for the breeding behavior of a variety of birds, and to study juvenile plumages. Public restroom available.
