Arrowhead Marsh and Alameda Bike Ride: Bart to Bart
November 5 @ 9:30 am - 2:30 pm
The highlight of the day is a high tide of 7.8 ft at 12:40 at Arrowhead that should be good for Rails. But first we’ll ride from Fruitvale BART to Elsie Roemer Bird Sanctuary, a shorebird hot spot. We will also be looking for other wintering and resident birds, ducks, hawks and passerines. If we have time, we will cycle to Ballena Bay, and then on to Arrowhead Marsh aiming to arrive no later than 1:00 pm just as the tide begins to recede. The high tide may impact mudflat birding, but the seasonal wetland and bay side birding should be good. From Arrowhead, we will return to Coliseum BART.
The approximate cycling route is at: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/37804815. Beginners welcome! Depending on timing, we will stop for snacks/lunch at Elsie Roemer Sanctuary, Ballena Bay or at MLK Shoreline Center. Bring lunch (no place to buy food).
Bike helmets required. Bring binoculars and wear warm layered clothes. Restrooms are located in the BART stations, Arrowhead Marsh, Shoreline Center and along Shore Line Drive on Alameda. This birding ride is co-listed with Grizzly Peak Cyclists.
Rain cancels. Call Pat’s cell the morning of ride if you are not sure. Call or email Cathy Bleier with other questions at email@example.com.
This trip is free but advance registration is required. Registration will open two weeks before the trip and close at 4 p.m. on Thursday, November 4. Directions for registered participants are below.
Please note the public health guidelines for this trip, as we emerge from the Covid-19 pandemic:
Ride is limited to 12 participants, plus the leaders. There will not be a waiting list.
Participants must register online and acknowledge acceptance of our liability waiver. Each person must register separately. No “drop ins,” please.
Thank you for your flexibility in helping us ensure that everyone remains healthy! Because we have to limit the size of trips, please do not sign up unless you are committed to attending.
Directions: Meet at 9:30 am at Fruitvale BART near the ticket machines. Leaders plan to be on BART trains scheduled to arrive at 9:21 and 9:25. If you drive, there is a $3.55 parking charge.
